These guys taxi at like 30 mph, so the taxiing is almost as exciting as the takeoff roll.

The maintence people at Southwest used to have a habit of taxiing around 60-70 mph. Then the FDAP team started pulling data after maintenance taxis.

When you hit rotation speed on the taxi way... that’s SWA.

Eight years ago, I arranged to have my son’s birthday party at the fire station at AUS. It was really cool. They showed us the engines, let us climb around inside, and then they rolled the engines out and sprayed water. Good times. The captain who was leading the tour said that the SWA guys are supposed to taxi no faster than 30 mph, but that they always haul ass to get to the gate. We flew SWA last year, and it was like an autocross to get to the gate. I passed the pilot in the hallway and said, “Wow, you guys really left it all on the track.”

I’ve read that the riskiest part of flying is in the terminal, not on the plane. How are the crowds?

Southwest and United are my two most flown on airlines, can confirm southwest wastes no time getting to the takeoff queue

SWA’s taxi speeds are legendary among airline pilots. The rest of us just shake out heads and watch them fly by. It’s all due to how the pilots are paid there, they get extra money if they beat the block time the flight is scheduled for while everyone else is paid by the minute. So the rest of us follow the FAA’s guidance on taxi speeds while SWA do their own thing.

You are airline pilot? I want to be remembered as one of the better pilots who never flew. I’m a big fan of powered flight and daydreamed for many years about being an airline pilot, but somewhere around 52 years of age, I realized that the dream had faded. Now I just pester the pilots about their landings after the fact. “Why’d you stick it so hard? Was it a short runway?”

One flight there was a discernable crispness about the control inputs on what seemed like an involved approach and I went up to talk to the pilot who was a woman captain who’d been flying for like 40 years and started out on C-130s in the USMC. She was one of the coolest women I have ever met and I keenly regret not asking her for an email address. Very, very impressive.
